My friend, the Contemplative Charismatic, has offered his favourite definition of ‘worship is…’
“Everyone has a favorite definition of “worship.” My favorite comes from the book Discerning the Spirits: “to call attention to the glory of God and humble ourselves before him.” This definition is simple, understandable, and really, really hard to do all the time.”
Visit Nick’s blog for the rest of his comments as well as his continuing ‘drops in the bucket’ in his conversation about worship.
OK, but is that really how it goes, practically speaking? In the churches I’ve most recently attended, “worship” means “30 minutes of singalong and guitar-playing.” Seems like “worship” is just a shorthand word for “musictime.” Not saying this is good or bad; just saying how it is, in my experience.
Totally agree and have the same experience. In fact as a ‘worship leader’ I have in the past even progated that unheathly understanding of worship. It’s time to redefince our expereince and our language of worship. Check out my other post on ‘In Coming, In Gathering, In Going’ and ‘Leaving the Church is the Ultimate Litrugical act’ – it will give you context for where I feel led to lead…
Thanks for the comment.
I’ll read those posts….
how about worship as reaching? I’ve just posted on this, in case you are interested.
